Sports Medicine at Cranbrook

Athletic Trainers Trevor Lopez and Brian Cheney are available to our coaches, athletes, and parents to discuss injury prevention, rehabilitation, injury assessment, and give recommendations regarding treatments and referrals. Common referrals include performance enhancement, concussion follow-up, orthopedics, running evaluations and Dartfish. They are able to assist in obtaining follow-up care with any of our preferred providers.

Brian and Trevor also assist our student athletes in the following ways:
  • ImPACT concussion baseline testing for high concussion risk sports or as requested 
  • Fabrication of custom mouth guards for sports that require mouth guards 
  • They attend all major home games; travel with Boys Varsity Football, Boys Varsity Ice Hockey, and Boys Varsity Lacrosse 
  • On non-game days they are available in the Athletic Training Room for practice preparation, injury evaluation and rehab

  • Dr. Nancy White, M.D. - Team Physician

    Dr. White received her medical degree from Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine. She completed a Family Medicine residency at Providence Hospital and a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Michigan State University, Kalamazoo Campus. She joined the staff of Henry Ford Health System in 1995 and has participated in the care of a wide variety of athletes since that time.

    In addition to providing medical coverage at Cranbrook Kingswood, Dr. White serves as an International Team Physician for US Figure Skating and provides event coverage at the Detroit Opera House. She serves as the Program Director for the Henry Ford Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

    Dr. White currently sees patients at the Henry Ford Columbus Center, Center for Athletic Medicine, and Henry Ford – Novi centers.
  • Dr Eric Makhni M.D., M.B.A. - Team Physician

    Dr. Makhni is a board-eligible orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and joint preservation of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. He also has extensive training in non-operative and injection-based modalities for joint preservation and injury recovery. He has a strong research background in managing shoulder and elbow injuries in overhead athletes and baseball players, including Tommy John Surgery and labral repairs. He also has extensive training in treatment of complex hip and knee injuries, including hip preservation surgery for labral tears and complex knee ligament reconstruction.
    Dr. Makhni was born in Chicago but grew up on the east coast of Florida. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences. He went on to complete a dual MD/MBA program at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School.

    Following graduation, he completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University in New York City, as well as specialized sports medicine fellowship at the renowned Rush University Medical Center. He has served as a team physician for multiple professional and semi-professional athletic teams, such as the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago White Sox.

    Dr. Makhni is on faculty at the Henry Ford Hospital and Wayne State University in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Division of Sports Medicine. He sees patients in West Bloomfield and Troy. He has a number of ongoing clinical research projects working with athletes of all different skill and age levels.     He is also a member of several professional organizations, such as the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He was recently appointed as a committee member of the STOP! Sports Injuries Campaign. He is very passionate about international service and has completed surgical missions in the Dominican Republic as well as in India.
