CK Rowing Brings Home State Title for Second Year in a Row

Cranbrook Kingswood's Will Van Houten won the gold medal in the men's single at the 10th annual Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan Championships on May 19 in Grand Rapids. It was CK's second consecutive victory in this event at States, after Josh Hartman's win last year. On a rainy day on the Grand River, CK placed two other boats into the finals and raced well in hard-fought heats.

The women's junior 4+ (Sophie Cronk, Cate Hofley, Emma Van Houten, Grace Li, Daisey Yu) finished 2nd of 5 in their heat and 5th in the final. The women's varsity pair (Nicole Hua, Desai Wang) also finished 2nd of 5 in the heat and 5th in the final.

The women's lightweight 4+ (Clarissa Babila, Yani Li, Hye-Jin Kang, Angie Kwon, Emily Liu) had the 5th fastest time overall in the heats. Unfortunately, they drew the "fast heat" and finished 4th, one place out of qualifying position.

Three crews earned 3rd place heat finishes in events where only two boats advanced to the final. The men's junior 8+ (Addison Wang, Casey Kim, Trey O'Hara, Jerome Wiater, Nikhil Vasan, Long Tran, Masaki Ito, Isaac Cantin, Nick Rhodes), the men's varsity 4+ (Patrick Baker, Thomas Libcke, Austin Rose, Neil Patrick, Liu), and the men's freshman 4+ (Lucas Schattenmann, Tony Cao, Jason Cho, Ross Newett, Joel Greene) all battled to put crews behind them but fell just short of qualifying.

The men's lightweight 4+ (Julian Wray, Gio Esquivel, Bennett Nelson, Hyunsoo Ryu, Yu) were 5th of 6 in their heat.

The women's junior 8+ (Cronk, Hofley, E. Van Houten, G. Li, Margaret Schmidt, Kerrigan Carr, Olivia Li, Rachael Kong, Sherrye Ye) finished 4th of 5 in their heat.

The men's varsity 8+ (W. Van Houten, Libcke, Baker, Wiater, Patrick, Esquivel, Ito, Cantin, Wray) finished 5th of 6 in a very close heat.

The women's varsity 8+ (Hua, D. Wang, Babila, Y. Li, Kang, Kwon, Cat Zheng, Carr, Liu) finished 4th of 4 in another tight heat.

Despite a late start to the on-the-water season due to a cold early April, CK Rowing was able to get all five spring 2018 regattas in successfully, with competitive performances and definitive improvement across the board.
