CK Rowing Brings Home First-Ever Gold Medal at Midwest Championships!

Coach German
Cranbrook Kingswood Rowing's Will Van Houten won the men's varsity single at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association Championships on May 12-13 in Zanesville, OH. His victory was CK's first-ever gold medal performance at Midwest, which brings together 46 teams from the region to battle for qualifying spots to Nationals. Van Houten will represent CK at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Championships on May 25-26 in Camden, NJ.

CK also had two other crews advance to the Sunday finals. The men's junior double of Masaki Ito and Julian Wray finished in 5th place overall, missing 4th place by just over 1 second. Ito and Wray had the 5th fastest time in the time trial of 16 entries, and they finished in 3rd place in their semifinal.

The women's pair of Nicole Hua and Desai Wang finished in 6th place overall, less than 1 second out of 5th. They finished third in their semifinal to earn a trip to the final.

On Saturday, three other CK crews advanced from the time trial qualifier to the semifinal round. The men's varsity 2x (Thomas Libcke and Patrick Baker) finished 12th of 16 in the time trial and 6th in their semi.

The men's junior 8+ (Addison Wang, Casey Kim, Tray O'Hara, Jerome Wiater, Nikhil Vasan, Long Tran, Ito, Isaac Cantin, Nick Rhodes) finished 11th of 16 in the time trial. Their afternoon semi was cancelled due to a thunderstorm. Instead, the regatta placed the top seven time trial finishers into the Sunday final.

The women's junior 4+ (Sophie Cronk, Cate Hofley, Emma Van Houten, Grace Li, Daisey Yu) had a similar fate: they advanced with a 10th of 19 finish in the time trial, but the semifinals were cancelled and the top seven were placed in the final.

The women's lightweight 4+ event was direct to semifinal, where CK (Clarissa Babila, Yani Li, Hye-Jin Kang, Angie Kwon, Emily Liu) finished 5th of 6.

Finally, the men's varsity 8+ (W. Van Houten, Libcke, Baker, Wiater, Neil Patrick, Gio Esquivel, A. Wang, Cantin, Wray) found themselves just out of qualifying position with a 13th place finish in the time trial.

CK's next race is the Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan State Championship Regatta on May 19 in Grand Rapids.
