Exploring Campus by Bike: MSG Cyclists on the Go

As our GMS students cruise into summer they are taking a newly sharpened set of skills with them. For more than 15 years, the Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School for Girls Cycling Club has been helping students discover the joy of biking—and exploring and navigating the landscape around them — one ride at a time. The club was started by the late Miles Robinson, longtime MSG science teacher known for his spirited approach to learning, and social studies teacher Geri Brandimarte. Since then, it has become a treasured intramural tradition each fall and spring.
More than just a sport, the cycling club offers what counselor Linda Flaga describes as “play-based and place-based” learning. As MSG students in grades 6 through 8 ride together across the grounds, they stop to explore iconic and lesser-known corners of the Cranbrook Educational Community campus. Faculty leaders like Flaga, English teacher Susan Quinn, and art teacher Rob Thies guide the way, sharing insights into campus history, encouraging exploration, and creating space for spontaneous learning and play.

Each ride becomes an adventure in building confidence, fostering friendships across grades, and learning to see the campus as a living classroom. From architectural landmarks to wooded trails, the girls encounter the full sweep of Cranbrook’s identity—its beauty, its history, and its spirit.
