Dr. Darryl Taylor

Dr. Darryl Lynn Taylor, H/C '70, became the fourth director of Cranbrook Schools Horizons-Upward Bound (HUB) Program in 2010. He is the first HUB graduate and Cranbrook alumnus to direct HUB.  He credits the program for making possible all his successes in life.

Dr. Taylor leads by doing. There is no better person to direct the program than a successful alumnus who gives credit to HUB for changing his life. Since becoming the director in 2010, he has strengthened the program academically, responded to the changing needs and challenges of today's students, and submitted a winning proposal to the U.S. Department of Education for renewed federal funding.

Some of his major initiatives include the HUB/Cranbrook Community Garden, Math and Science Summer (MaSS) program; Toastmasters' Youth Leadership Workshop, financial literacy workshops, learning and reading assessments, Reading Beyond Horizons reading proficiency program (Dr. Taylor has his certification as a specialist to administer this program), Tai Chi, Beaumont Future Medical Scholars Program, creative writing and expression workshops, MISTER (Male Issues Seen Through Exciting Reading) and SISTER (Strongly Impacting Sisters Through Exciting Readings) Programs.

Dr. Taylor attended the University of Detroit and was commissioned as an Ensign in the Naval Reserves. He earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan and began his active duty career as an Assistant Dental Officer at the Naval Regional Dental Center in Norfolk., VA. During his thirty year career he had many tours of duty in the United States and abroad, and his last assignment was Dental Officer of the U.S. Marine Corps at the Pentagon. Dr. Taylor's decision to become a career officer in the Navy was influenced by the dedication of his HUB teachers who wanted to make a difference, a philosophy he has adopted.

In addition to his HUB directorship duties, Dr. Taylor serves as the President of the Michigan College Access Programs & Personnel (MI-CAPP), assistant coach of the girls junior varsity golf team, mentoring supervisor for Cranbrook boys mentoring program and volunteers his clinical skills in Michigan Dental Association-sponsored Mission of Mercy Dental Clinics.

He is married to the former Denise Lynn Ford of Detroit and they have two daughters, D'Erica and Danielle.
