It's doubtful anyone had better Valentine's Day plans than to watch the battle in the pool between two of the area's top swim/dive teams. On Thursday, Cranbrook Kingswood Cranes hosted their final dual meet of the season against the Catholic Central Shamrocks, and it was a battle from the first horn.
The meet opened as always with the 200Y Medley relay. CC's team of Walsh, Newman, Vela and Roelant took an early lead, but in no time Cranbrook's F. Misra, Liu, Chantadansuwan and Tattrie had taken over. On the final 25 of the freestyle leg, Tattrie and Roelant battled back and forth for the lead. In the end, Roelant prevailed by a mere 0.12 seconds.
Next up, the 200Y Free where Tim Szuba seemed to have the first half of the race all to himself. By the end, teammate Colin Brinkman and CK's Andrew Guan had closed the gap. They finished 1-2-3 with a 1:48.20, a 1:49.35, and a 1:50.56 respectively.
On to the 200Y IM where it was Shamrock Jack Walsh's race. He finished with an incredible 1:56.41, with Matt Liu (CK), Ryan Newman (CC), and Danny Misra (CK) all finishing with State qualifying times.
The 50Y Free was another tight race, with the top 6 finishers all turning in times between 23.13 and 24.96.
The meet turned to diving where Cranbrook's Grant Glover once again emerged at the clear leader. With his difficult and consistent dives, he took first with a score of 177.80. Robert Vance of Catholic Central and Cranbrook's Ray Gagliardi took second and third with impressive scores of 156.95 and 140.40 respectively.
We took a pause in the meet to honor our seniors - all 8 of them - and our special teammate, Peerasorn Chantadansuwan.
(A side note to Sun: I just learned how to spell your name without looking - you can't leave now!). Coach Karl Hodgson had remarks prepared for each boy, as they were joined by their parents and took their places on the blocks. Congrats again to our fine seniors adn to Sun. You will be missed:
- Kenta Araki, captain
- Webster Burton, captain
- Matthew Liu, captain
- Mousa Ghannam
- Austin Glover
- Russell Lee
- Danny Misra
- Johnny Pang
The swimming resumed, and so did the battle. The next several events would see an very even distribution between the two teams. Walsh (CC), Buccalo (CK) and Vela (CC) took top spots in the 100Y Fly. Brinkman (CC), Guan (CK), Roelant (CC), Guttilla (CK) and Tattrie (CK) were the point earners for their teams in the 100Y Free.
Danny Misra ran away with the 500Y Free, turning in a time of 4:56.79. Robinson (CC), Schneider (CK), Chantadansuwan (CK), and Bezzina (CC) rounded out the top 5.
Relays always provide the most excitement, and the 200 Free Relay did not disappoint. The time spread between 1st and 3rd was just over 4 seconds. The Shamrock team of Roelant, Brinkman, Arnold and Robinson took first with a time of 1:33.92. Cranbrook took second and third places with their teams of Guan, Guttilla, Pang and Tattrie (1:34.17) and Lee, Misra, Keoleian and Schneider (1:38.55).
The top four in the 100Y Back finished with State qualifying times: CC's Tim Szuba took first with a 56.84, Frankie Misra of Cranbrook took 2nd with a 57.51, and Simon Shanks (CC) and Andrew Trunsky (CK) took 3rd and 4th with a 58.19 and a 1:00.48.
So it went for the 100Y Breast as well, with CK's Matt Liu and his 1:00.62 taking first, Ryan Newman of CC in 2nd with a 1:02.07, and Mitch Buccalo and Girogio DelGrosso taking 3rd and 4th with times of 1:03.91 and 1:05.42.
And what sweeter way to end the meet than with the 400 Free Relay. First place clearly belonged to Catholic Central where the team of Szuba, Walsh, Brinkman and Vela turned in a time of 3:23.25. But the rest of it belonged to Cranbrook, whose teams took 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Those teams were:
- Guan, Guttilla, F. Misra, Liu
- Pang, D. Misra, Buccalo, Chantadansuwan
- Tattrie, Schneider, Lee, Burton
Final score: Catholic Central 98.5 Cranbrook 87.5
Way to go boys!
