CK Boys Varsity Tennis Team Headed to State Finals

Boys Varsity Tennis Team Headed to State Finals

The Cranbrook Tennis Courts were in all of their fall glory as CK hosted the Regional Tennis competition for a number of area Division 3 schools. By the end of the day, CK took second place honors and, as a result, is headed off to the State finals next week in Holland.

The many visiting players and their fans were in awe of the CK tennis facilities. As the visiting teams valiantly fought on the courts, we were all treated to best of high school tennis.

By the time of the final rounds, it looked like a replay of the DCD/CK dual meet of a few weeks ago as each flight featured competitors from both schools. Alas, the end result was also quite similar. DCD led all teams in the regional competition by going undefeated, winning all eight flights, with CK coming in second across the board.

Both teams ventured onto the courts for a closer view of the last match of the day, CK’s Nithin Davuluri versus his DCD opponent. It was a battle royale. Nithin won the first set and took the second set down to the wire, losing in a tie breaker. That set the table for the decisive third stanza. The players battled back and forth, fighting through each serve, reaching out for the elusive backhand, the lob and the lightning quick forehand. Unlike their last match, on today’s windswept courts, DCD emerged victorious, capping a clean sweep of each finals match.

Coach Etterbeek was indeed proud of his CK squad. When you compare the skills exhibited just a few weeks ago at the start of the season to the skillful display of talents at regionals, he could only see significant improvement. He likes where his players stand as they enter into the final week of practice and then the State Finals.

You will see this dedicated, hard working team on the courts each and every day this week as they work out the final kinks and build their endurance for the challenging state competition that awaits them. They realize the difficult quest ahead of them but they will attack each challenger in the same way they have all year, with direct effort, balanced by skill and determination.

Check back on Crannet next week as we update you from the State Finais.

I am certain that you will all join in wishing this team the best of luck in Holland.
Go Cranes, Go CK, Go Tennis.
