Cranes win season opener 33-6 over Lutheran Westland

Steve Graf
The Cranbrook Cranes football team kicked off the 2011 season on the road with a strong showing over non-conferance opponent Lutheran Westland Friday evening.

To start the game off senior Jack Briggs had some good blocking and returned the opening kickoff 65 yards. Senior Mike Ray started out a great kicking day by putting the Cranes on the scoreboard first with a 39 yard field goal. Westland came right back and pounded the ball for a 12 play 66 yard drive to go on top 6-3.

In the second quarter senior Ned Rogers and sophomore Belvin Liles each had a sack on the warrior quaterback and the CK defense tighted up to slow down Westland's offense. The Crane offense also got on track. Mike ray hit his second field goal (a 29 yarder) to tie the game up 6-6. The CK special teams gave the offense good field position and senior running back Christian Croom had a big 35 yard run to set up his first touchdown of the day on a 12 yard run. Croom came back in the next series with another 12 yard run to send the cranes to the locker room at halftime with a 20-6 lead. Ray kicked both PATs after Croom's TDs.

The Cranes came out in the 3rd quarter focused on finishing what they started. The defense got a turnover with a fumble recovery by junior linebacker Keegan Keln and the offense scored on a 45 yard run by Croom for his third of the day. The PAT was missed. The defense held the Warrior offense on downs in the next series and the Crane offense scored the final points of the game on a 10 yard run by sophomore running back Joe Myrick. PAT was good by Ray.

With three regular starters out with injuries everyone played and contributed to the win. Special teams gave us great field position and scored points, the offense controlled the ball and had no turnovers, and the defense shut down the Westland offense while creating two turnovers with the fumble recovery and a 4th quater interception by junior linebacker Aric Homovek.

The Cranes will play their home opener against rival and former Metro Conference member Clarenceville at 4:00 on Thursday Sept. 1st. We need everyone out there to support the team!
