The Cranbrook-Kingswood boys golf team placed second this weekend at the MHSAA State Tournament held at MSU's Forest Akers East golf course. The team fired a first round score of 303 to finish the first round in 3rd place. Griffin Smith led the way on day one with a 2-under par round of 70. Michael Ray shot 75 on day one, with Mike Pawelkowski and Matt Vlasic each finishing the day with 79's. Richie VanVoorhis shot 81 on day one.
Looking to move up, the Cranes improved on their day one score with a team total of 300 to move into second place overall. Griffin Smith followed up his day one score with a fine 71. This earned Griffin the Division 2 State Championship. Mike Pawelkowski shot a season-best 74, while Richie VanVoorhis birdied his final hole to shoot 77. Michael Ray shot 78 on day two, and Matt Vlasic shot his second straight 79.
This was CK's best finish at the State Tournament since the 1999 team won it all. Griffin Smith became the 3rd CK golfer to win the individual title over the last 20 years, but the first since Andrew Klein in 1999.
