CK Crew Celebrates First-Ever Gold Medal: Women's Varsity 8+ Makes History

The entire Cranbrook Kingswood Crew--52 strong--celebrated the rowing program's first gold medal performance on Saturday as the Women's Varsity Eight took first at the Wyandotte High Schools Regatta. The Cranes (Rebecca Shapiro '11, Lindsey Stolzenfeld '12, Katie Allan '11, Haley Harper '13, Betsy McCabe '11, Emily Liebman '11, Natalie Bolton '14, Noa Ervin '12, and Tricia O'Brien '14) led from start to finish and defeated Ann Arbor Huron and three other crews.

The Cranes (Rebecca Shapiro '11, Lindsey Stolzenfeld '12, Katie Allan '11, Haley Harper '13, Betsy McCabe '11, Emily Liebman '11, Natalie Bolton '14, Noa Ervin '12, and Tricia O'Brien '14) led from start to finish and defeated Ann Arbor Huron and three other crews.

The Women's Varsity Eight was CK's last race of the day, and it certainly put an exclamation on an impressive day of racing. Other highlights:

In the first race of the day, the Women's Novice Eight (Audrey Elkus '14, Hannah Reinhardt '14, Claire Erwin '14, Piper Batey '14, Tricia O'Brien '14, Eleanor Bush '14, Natalie Bolton '14, Jackie Anusbigian '14, and Maia Collins '14) took first place in their qualifying heat. They went on to finish fourth (of 12 total entrants) in the final.

The Men's Novice Eight (Marisa Goldsmith '14, Tim Hunt '14, Will Libcke '14, Joel Warren '14, Steven Ji '14, Nelson Diallo '14, Tim Hafke '14, David Wu '13, and Jongho Shin '14) also earned a trip to the finals by finishing third in their qualifying heat. They finished fifth (of 12 total entrants) in the final.

Lindsey Stolzenfeld '12 and Katie Allan '11 earned a silver medal in the Women's Varsity Pair. This was CK's first-ever race in the women's pair.

The Men's Junior Eight (Nick Giron '12, Jay Ghesquiere '12, Nick Sheehan '13, Jack Coleman '13, Giancarlo Stefanutti '13, Colin Turner '12, Cris Lee '13, Kevin Kresnak '13, and Will Wiener '13) put on a furious sprint at the end of their final, missing the bronze medal by only .6 seconds. They finished an impressive fourth of 10 total entries.

The Men's Double of senior captains Alec Malstrom and Henry Lent finished 5th of 7 in only their second career sculling race.

Finally, the Women's Novice Lightweight Four (Elkus, Reinhardt, Erwin, Bush, and Alle Tyler '13) earned a bronze medal.
