In the fall, 230 of our students competed in two hundred and eighty four contests. There have been some great highlights and success stories. Our students have earned numerous accolades and have had great experiences because of your passion and expertise. I have noted these highlights and accolades for your enjoyment.
After hosting the regional tournament on a picture perfect fall day and taking care of business by winning the regional championship…..the boys tennis team continued their quest for gold at States. Individually at Regionals, Adam Gumushian (#3 singles), Michael Kaye (#4 singles), George Orley and Max Manley (#1 doubles), Daniel and Mathew Gold (#3 doubles) and Alexander David and Brady Sheehan (#4 doubles) won their respective regional championships. Our boys dominated the State Tournament by winning 6 of the 8 events. Congratulations go out to the new individual State Champs Mathew McCormick (2 singles), Michael Kaye (4 singles), and our doubles teams Orley and Manley (1 doubles), Corey Goodstein and Andrew Georgeson (2 doubles), the Gold brothers (3 doubles) and David and Sheehan (4 doubles). Jeff LoDuca, Max Manley, George Orley, Matthew McCormick made the All State Team and Andrew Georgeson and Corey Goodstein earned Honorable Mention All-State honors.
Our Girls Swim and Dive team finished the season 2nd in the State! Fourteen members of the team achieved an amazing 43 state cuts. Julia Briggs, Milon Crawford, Kaitlyn Fries, Molly Laubernds, Madeline Montgomery, Alex Miller, Kylie Powrie, Emily and Nicola Reasoner, Alexa Reseter, Larissa Sambel, Juliet Wu and Kendall Young represented CK at the State Meet. Sterling Kaiser finished 3rd in the Regional Diving Championships hosted by CK and advanced to State. At the State Meet Kylie Powrie won the State Championship in the 500 freestyle. Kylie also took 5th in the 200 freestyle. Alexa Resetar took second place in the 100 backstroke. Emme Reasoner took 4th in the 200 freestyle and 5th in the 100 butterfly. Kylie, Alexa, Emme and Molly Laubernds took 2nd in the 400 freestyle relay. Kylie, Emme, Molly, and Milon Crawford took 3rd in the 200 freestyle relay. Alex Miller also took 6th in the 100 butterfly. Alexa, Alex, Milon and Kaitlyn Fries also took 3rd in the medley relay. These girls each earned All-State Honors for their performance as top 8 finishers in their events. Sterling Keiser took 11th at States in the Diving Championships earning her Honorable Mention All-State recognition. Also earning Honorable Mention All State was Larissa Sambel (200 meter) Julia Briggs (100 butterfly), Resetar (200 IM), Crawford (100 Fr), Laubernds (200 Fr) and Miller (200 Fr).
Our girl’s golf team fared well in championship play. In the Oakland County Championships at Pontiac Municipal, Co-Captain Caroline Shinkle finished 4th shooting a 77 while freshman Greer Clausen finished 6th with a score of 81. In regional competition, the Lady Linksters fired a sizzling 364 at Willow Metro Park to bring home the Regional Championship. The team's effort was most impressive, as they outdistanced neighborhood rival and defending Regional Champ, Detroit County Day, by 19 strokes. Greer Clausen earned medalist honors for her third place finish, shooting a fine 81 with nines of 44/37. Co - Captain Lauren Dolik continued her consistent play with a solid 92, good for sixth place individually. Sarah Dalley and Rebecca Glasser saved their best for last, each firing high school career bests, with rounds of 95 and 96 respectively. Caroline Shinkle, added a 103 to complete the scoring. The victory sent Cranbrook back to the State Tournament in East Lansing for the first time since 2006. The girls finished the weekend with a 9th place finish at State. Greer finished 11th in the State which was excellent for a freshman. The team also earned Academic All State recognition for their hard work in the classroom. Katy Dresner, Rebecca Glasser and Caroline Shinkle were recognized individually as Academic All State honorees.
Our girls volleyball team has had an exciting season and have worked hard to win their first District Championship since 1981 and extended the post season all the way to the regional championship game of the State Tournament! The team finished the season with a record of 11-11 and 4-4 in the West Division of the Catholic League. Volleyball started out on a high note winning the East Lansing Tournament and the girls worked hard to adapt to the new level of competition in the Catholic League. The team was led by the outstanding all-around play of Senior Captain Caley Chelios who earned All District and All Catholic League honors. Junior Paige Weaver has been a strong net presence this year earning her All League honors. The defense was anchored by Senior Captain Alyssa Barone. First time player, Senior Eva Heidingsfelder, earned All Academic honors for the Catholic League.
The boys soccer team has managed to carry over their record breaking outstanding play of last year into the 2010 season. The team finished the regular season at the top of the Catholic League Tri-Sectional division with a record of 14-2-3 and lost a tough double overtime Regional Final game with 18 seconds left to end the season. The team finished ranked 9th in the State. Sr
Andrew Rouff, Joey LaGrasso, Cameron Scott, Chandler Burch, Connor Sakwa and Riku Kiyokawa earned All District honors. Captain Connor Sakwa also earned Academic All Catholic League. Chandler, Joey, Andrew and Cameron made the All Catholic League team while Connor, Elliot Rosenfeld and Won Young Na earned All League honors. Keeper Andrew Rouf earned 1st Team All-State honors while Joey LaGrasso earned 2nd Team and Cameron Scott earned honorable Mention All-State.
Cross Country hosted our first Catholic Jamboree which that brought over 300 cross country boys and girls to our campus. Out girls team not only took first place in the jamboree, they secured the Coed Division of the Catholic League Championship! Our girls finished 4th at the Regional Meet with sophomore standout Jemma Howlett winning the Regional Championship and advancing to State! Stephanie Singer also advanced to State by finishing 10th in the Regional Meet. At State, Jemma finished 34th and Stephanie 89th and both ran personal bests. Jemma also placed 23rd in the Oakland County Championships. Jemma and Stephanie were honored on the Academic All State Team. Our boys team finished 10th at Regionals.
The Varsity field hockey team finished the season with a 4-8-3 record. The girls were ranked 4th in their division and tied for 16th in the state. The team finished the season winning in the first round of the state tournament in an exciting overtime shoot out to defeat Coach Getz’ alma mater. Junior goalie Colleen Jacoby earned All State and All Catholic League honors, while senior Captain Rebecca Glasser earned All State and All League recognition and senior Captain Shaina Shetty earned Honorable Mention All State and Academic All League.
The CK football team finished the season on a good note as they sent the seniors off with back to back wins. The team 3 and 6 Cranes experienced what it meant to compete in the tough Catholic League (known for its football reputation) and will look to build the program for the future.
Running back/Linebacker and Senior Captain Stefan Czarnecki lead the team in rushing and scoring earning him All Catholic League honors. Senior captain Mack Gembis earned All Academic honors for his excellence in the classroom as well as on the field and lineman Jordon Davis Foss earned All League recognition. Linebacker and senior Captain Josh Brill also earned Honorable Mention All League. Mack Gembis was also honored on the Academic All-State 2nd Team for his excellence in the classroom as well as on the field.
Congratulations goes out to the football, girls golf, boys soccer, boys tennis and volleyball teams for representing CK on the All-State Academic Teams.
