CK Girls Take 2nd Place at States

Valorie Guthrie

The Ck Girl’s varsity tennis displayed a strong performance at States winning 24 points for a second place finish. A dominant East Grand Rapids team scored an impressive 34 points to win the state title. Detroit Country Day also tied for second with 24 points.

Ck battled hard with 6 of their 8 flights reaching the semi finals. In singles play, #1 Lisa Grosselius won her first match to reach the quarter finals where she fell to Allegan 3-6,2-6.  #2 Maya Hicks prevailed in the quarters before falling in the semi-finals to eventual champion East Grand Rapids 4-6,2-6.  #3 Natasha Dabrowski breezed through quarter final and semi-final challenges before dropping a tense, well played final to East Grand Rapids 3-6,3-6.  #4 Elizabeth Baiardi left it all on the court in outlasting her semi-final opponent before dropping a long, close finals match to Country Day 3-6,4-6.

In doubles play, #1 Jane Lent and Rachael Hubers played an exciting, highly competitive 3 set nail biter before Allegan prevailed 6-4,4-6,5-7 before a boisterous crowd in the finals. #2 Kayla Guthrie and Caroline Shinkle came from behind to win their first match before dropping a highly competitive second round contest to Warren Regina, 1-6,6-7(5).  #3 Jourdan Gariepy and Samantha Bowers coasted in the quarters before dropping a closely contested semi-final match to East Grand Rapids 2-6,6-7(5).   #4 Megan Simmons and Alexa Armstrong also reached the semi finals only to fall to East Grand Rapids 2-6,1-6.

This young varsity team had a remarkable season in spite of the unseasonable weather conditions and several serious injuries.  After losing 8 seniors from last year’s team Coach Keith Cullen remarked that this was perhaps his most rewarding season.  “The girls worked hard, did what we (Assistant Coach Jeff Etterbeek) asked and improved from week to week. They had  great team spirit.”

CK has finished first or second at States every year since 1983. Congratulations to this year’s team for their season long achievements.

Go CK!!!!
