This year marked the Wilderness Expedition’s 40th year, with over 70 sophomores participating in the 10-day hiking
trip through the Nantahala National Forest area of North
Carolina/Tennessee.
The emphasis of the expedition has always
been on developing positive attitudes towards unfamiliar situations
while teaching specific outdoor skills. In this environment, students
are challenged to learn necessary basic skills, to accomplish
collective tasks as a group, and to meet the physical demands made on
them by the environment.
For many participants, this is their
first experience with an extensive backcountry adventure and a trip of
a lifetime. Not only does the Expedition stress the personal confidence
and strength one gains from taking part, but it also encourages a sense
of camaraderie among the tenth grade class.
