Horizons-Upward Bound honored with inclusion in Free Press Summer Dreams section

Cranbrook Schools’ Horizons-Upward Bound (HUB) program will be included in the Detroit Free Press’s Summer Dreams 2008 special section on April 28. The section, printed every year, highlights worthy summer programs for underserved children throughout southeastern Michigan and encourages readers to donate funds in support of those programs. The Skillman Foundation then matches contributions up to $500,000. Since the program began in 1993, nearly $14 million has been raised for summer camps, education programs and more for tens of thousands of Detroit area children.

HUB’s wish list for Summer Dreams 2008 focuses on support for its new Wilderness Program, which mirrors Cranbrook’s long-running program. Wilderness enables HUB students to leave the confines of southeastern Michigan and head up north where they have a chance to learn outdoor survival skills, engage in team building and leadership training and experience nature in a whole new way. “For many of our students, this is the first time they have been camping or experienced nature in its truest sense away from the cities and suburbs,” says Debra Whiting, Horizons-Upward Bound advancement officer. “This is an extraordinary experience for our kids, one that enriches them as students and helps them grow as young individuals.”

Founded in 1965, HUB’s mission is to prepare students with limited opportunity from the Detroit metropolitan area to enter and succeed in post-secondary education. HUB students participate in a 12-month program at Cranbrook Schools which is divided into two phates: a six-week summer residential phase for 180 students and a 24-Saturday winter phase during the school year with an additional 50 students in attendance. During the summer, students are enrolled in an intensive college-preparatory curriculum along with enrichment activities and athletics. The winter phase focuses on academic skills, tutoring and college and career guidance. Through four years of high school, students have access to more than 2,500 hours of structured academic learning experiences.
