Sun Shines Down on Miles Levin's Memorial Service

Hundreds Give Thanks for His Life and Legacy
Balloons filled the clear, sunny sky over the Oval last Friday afternoon. They were released in celebration of Miles Levin, CK'07, during a special memorial service held in his honor. Levin died last August after battling a rare pediatric cancer for more than two years. Hundreds of his family members, friends, former teachers and classmates gathered to share memories, sing songs and offer kind words in honor of Levin's legacy. Planned by his parents, Nancy and Jon, the event was held during the Thanksgiving Day break in order to accommodate Levin's classmates who returned home from universities and colleges nationwide. The timing could not have been more perfect as the community came together to give thanks for having made the acquaintance of this special young man.

Cranbrook Parent Ro Forester sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Seventh-Grader Jacob Feord recited a poem eloquently. Both CK Upper Teacher David Watson and Classmate Erik Mattson CK '07, offered words of respect, admiration and affection for Levin. Tears mixed with smiles on countless faces throughout the crowd as attendees remembered his endless spirit, powerful insight and incredible strength.

"The day was a remarkable tribute to Miles as a writer, a leader and a friend," says Head of Upper School Charles Shaw.

Certainly, it was a day that will long survive in the minds and hearts of those who knew Levin, serving as a gentle reminder to carry his torch for years to come.

We sensed a strong spiritual attendance by Miles as well. And thank you, C/K, for including Miles' commencement speech in the recent edition of TRADITION magazine about Cranbrook for alumni.
