It has been a tremendous year in CK athletics. Here is a wrap-up off the best news on and off the field.
CK Athletes Shine
Several CK students earned recognition from the newspaper media this winter sports season for their outstanding athletic abilities. Congratulations to the following student athletes:
• Andrew Miller, CK’07, ice hockey, was selected as February’s Oakland Press Athlete of the Month,
• Chris Rencher, CK’07, basketball, received Athlete of the Week honors from the Oakland Press.
• Kate Blessing CK’09, volleyball, earned Athlete of the Week recognition from the Eccentric newspaper.
• Brett Brazier, CK’07, ice hockey, was chosen as the Detroit Free Press Athlete of the Week.

Athletes Recognized for Academic Excellence
The National Consortium for Academics and Sports recognizes the following CK athletes for their excellence in academics and athletics. Congratulations to senior student-athletes: Marissa Ash, Brett Brazier, Kelsey Goin, Elizabeth Goldman, Ashleigh Green, Penn Greene, Erin Kelley, Erin Kennedy-Gebhart, Ryan McClure, Chris Oben, Anne Marie Skylis, and Trent Rook.

USTA Honors CK Tennis Player Shannon Matthews
Shannon Matthews, CK varsity tennis player, will receive the Helen Shockley Award for her tennis accomplishments, acts of good character and appropriate conduct on and off the court by the United States Tennis Association's (USTA) Midwest Division. Matthew's finished the 2006 season ranked No. 3 in the girls' 18 division and winning the girls' 18 singles title.

A CK junior, Matthews will once again play on the CK girl’s varsity
tennis team next fall.

CK Hockey Player Andrew Miller Earns Prestigious Awards
Andrew Miller, CK hockey player, received this year’s prestigious "Mr.
Hockey" Award for his outstanding season. Miller, the Cranes co- captain, registered 37 goals, 46 assists for 83 points in 30 games this year. The CK senior was the leading scorer for the Cranes. The Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association selected Miller to the 2007 "Dream Team.”

Miller plans to play junior hockey prior to attending Yale University where he also has verbally committed to playing hockey for the Ivy League college.

In the zone…

• Cranbrook Kingswood is in second place in the metro conference all-sports competition at the close of the winter season. The metro conference awards an all-sports trophy based on conference sports competition throughout the year.

• According to CK Upper School Director of Athletics Jeffrey Vennell, athletic director, CK Upper School, the Booster Club has pledged its support along with the schools’ support to strip and sand the Keppel Gymnasium floor surface in July to prepare for the fall sports season. The group also has purchased new batting cages for the softball and baseball teams.


CK Upper School Boys Athletics

Basketball
The team completed its season with an overall record of 16-6. It tied for first place during the regular season metro conference play with a 7-1 record and placed third overall. The team defeated Harper Woods for the first time in more than 12 years.

Alexander Strek and Christopher Rencher made the all-metro conference first team. Matthew Broder and Adam Morris made the all-metro conference second team.

Ice Hockey
The team won the Division III championship for a record-making 13th time by defeating Grand Rapids Catholic Central 2-1 following a 6-2 victory in the semi-final game versus Divine Child. Their season record was 25-4-1 and 8-2 in conference play. The team defeated Catholic Central for the first time in 10 years and, as a result, won the MHSAA regional championship. These athletes also earned the overall best team ranking among the three divisions that comprise the Michigan high school competition.

Andrew Miller, Max Pace and Dean Chelios made the all-state, first team. Brett Brazier, Benjamin Daiek, Zach Hansen made the all-state, second team.

Skiing
The boys’ varsity team finished the Pine Knob division with a 7-2 record. The team placed second in the MHSAA Regional meet. Robert Aiken made the all-state, second team in the giant slalom and slalom. Christian Huebner made the all-state, third team in the giant slalom.

Swimming
At the league meet the team had 30 personal best swims and recaptured the championship title for the eighth time in the last 10 years. Doug Ross, Hubert Yi, Matt Hogan and Riley Sherer qualified for the all-state team.

CK Upper School Girls Athletics

Volleyball
The team finished with an overall game record of 74- 51. The team’s match record was 27-21-4. In the metro conference, the team’s record was 6-2, finishing third during the regular season and in the tournament. The team won the Private School Invitational tournament. The team also will be recognized as the academic all-state team. Sarah Kauper and Erin Kelley made the all-metro, all-conference first team. Kate Blessing and Paige Simmons made the all-metro, all-conference second team.

Most Improved member: Abigail Cohen
Coach’s award: Erin Kelley.

Skiing
The girls’ varsity team finished its league schedule with a 1-8 record. The team was recognized by the Coaches Association as a scholar athlete team because of its GPA average of 3.73. Lauren Levanovich made the all-state, second team for the giant slalom and she made the all-state, third team for the slalom.

Hockey
The team completed its season with a 14-5-1 record and 13-4-1 in league play. Their record placed them third going into the state championship after upsetting the second-ranked Ladywood team. Ariel Magidson, Audrey Stapleton,
and Catherine LaGrasso made the all-state, second team.
Most valuable member: Catherine LaGrasso
Most improved member: Elizabeth Belen
Coach’s award: Pilar Ming.
