Cranbrook Kingswood fine arts students recently lent their expertise and support to William Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak providing design concepts and works of art for the new Charles Ghesquiere Family Center for Children’s Surgery that opened January 15, 2007. Nearly 300 faculty and students were challenged with creating childlike and relaxing motifs for seven preoperative rooms within the new center. The students began work on the project in the beginning of the school year developing hundreds of pieces to captivate children waiting for surgery. These inviting rooms feature a collection of unique ceramics, shadow boxes, metal-smithing, paintings, sculptures and tapestries made by CK students in classrooms this fall.

“This project allowed our students to apply creativity and critical thinking skills by developing art for a real-world setting,” says Arlyce Seibert, director of Cranbrook Schools. “We are honored that Beaumont— one of the largest hospital systems in the nation— entrusted Cranbrook Schools with such an important endeavor, one that will have a lasting and meaningful affect on our community.”

The overarching theme throughout the center is water symbolizing a tranquil yet powerful life source. CK students fused depictions of living creatures into the setting that will provoke young patients’ curiosity and help ease their anxiety. Patients and their families will be surrounded by playful jungle animals, plants, shapes and water life amidst soft color palettes that capture the essence of nature and the innocence of children. A Cranbrook Schools working crew devoted hundreds of hours of community service on site at the hospital to install their work over a six-week period that began following Thanksgiving Day.

“We welcomed the involvement of Cranbrook Kingswood fine art students in this project because of their talent and energy and dedication to helping children in our community facing surgery," says Allynn Petersen, Beaumont administrative director of surgical services. "Their artwork exceeded our expectations and is a highlight of the new Ghesquiere Family Children's Surgery Center.”

Beyond community outreach, CK students now have a greater understanding and appreciation for how professional artists work under the expectation of client approval and the pressure of deadlines.

“Often times the students would come up with great ideas that required adaptation to pass hospital code and maintain an allergen-free patient environment.” says Joe Smith, CK fine arts department head. “Throughout this project our students displayed strong work ethics and teamwork, and our faculty could not be more proud of their tenacity and results.”
