Lower, Middle School Students Partner with Alum, Upper School Students for Food Drive.

We use the word “community” at Cranbrook almost every day. This spring, in April and May, we were able to really see our community come together to live its values.

This year, the annual Third Grade Food Drive and Empty Bowls Dinner partnered with Dr. Kelly Levasseur, a CK alum and current Cranbrook parent and pediatric emergency physician at Children’s Hospital in Detroit.  Dr. Levasseur created the Feeding Detroit Kids Foundation after realizing that many of her patients were in need of food. This year she shared that story with our students at Brookside. After Dr. Levasseur explained what it meant to be truly hungry and how they as a school could help these other children, Jack Levasseur and Dylan O’Donnell, two Upper School students, talked about the process of collecting, sorting, and delivering the food.

To widen the Community involvement, Dr. Levasseur also spoke to the Girls Middle School who decided to hold a weeklong food drive as well.

The third graders collected, sorted, checked expiration dates, and boxed up the donated food.  On May 11, Jack, Dylan and Brendan Barnosky, CK freshmen and baseball players, collected and delivered all the donations.

Knowing it is never too early to learn the importance of fellowship and social responsibilities, Dr. Levasseur’s team at Children’s Hospital made a video for students in the ECC about how they could help. Our youngest learners were encouraged to donate stickers and band-aids for the kids in the hospital.

As part of this annual project, the third graders created beautiful ceramic bowls under the direction of the Brookside art teachers, and those were on display at the Empty Bowls Dinner held at the Girls Middle School for the third graders and their families last week. Over 200 people attended the dinner, and all proceeds went to support the Feeding Detroit Kids Foundation.

We can be proud of all the students involved for their compassion and hard work this Spring and look forward to watching them grow and develop these traits.
