Campus as Curriculum

Place-Based learning at Cranbrook Schools continues to develop and grow.

It is often said that Cranbrook’s unequaled campus is the school’s longest-serving educator. A recent study of student learning experiences showed 7,758 Cranbrook Schools student visits to Cranbrook Art Museum (CAM), Cranbrook Institute of Science (CIS) and Cranbrook Center for Collections and Research (CCCR) in the 2022-2023 school year.

At CIS, classes and programs had diverse experiences involving such topics as dinosaurs, anthropology, economics, animal skins, astronomy, chemistry, robotics, electricity, geography, history, and local history.

CAM visits involved vault visits, outside sculptures, art labs, studio work, and gallery forums.

CCCR experiences included visits to Saarinen house, Smith House, Cranbrook House, Thornlea, and the Japanese Garden as well as tours and lectures around campus.

Students across every grade and program are benefiting from their access to the remarkable spaces, collections, and experts at Cranbrook. Exploring learning opportunities outside the classroom will continue to be a priority for the schools moving forward. Most importantly, students love the opportunity to experience the campus resources!
