Worlds Collide!

Cranbrook Map Room, Explorers, Post Cards

Students in 10th grade History class Intersections: Past and Present use the huge 1928 John Hession Expedition & Exploration map at Cranbrook as a research starting point. Upper School teachers Pam German and Chris Bryant invite students to note intriguing aspects of the map and to choose an explorer shown on the map for further inquiry.

Students then research and report on the life, dates and events of their explorer. Finally, students write a post card from the perspective of their explorer, to a spouse, friend, or sponsoring crown. This project gives the students a chance to use an important part of Cranbrook’s history to learn about and imagine lives and worlds from long ago.
