The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) has named The Crane – the student newspaper of the Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School for Boys – as one of 54 scholastic student newspapers, newsmagazines and specialty magazines published during the 2022-23 school year as finalists in its prestigious Pacemaker competition.
NSPA Pacemaker finalists will be recognized, and the Pacemaker winners announced for the first time, on Nov. 4, at the NSPA Awards Ceremony during the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Boston. The finalists represent 18 states as well as the United Kingdom.
“The Pacemaker is the association’s preeminent award,” Executive Director Laura Widmer said. “NSPA is honored to recognize the best of the best.”
According to the NSPA, the Pacemaker award “Has a rich tradition and the association started presenting the award to high school newspapers a few years after the organization was founded in 1921. Throughout the years, yearbooks, magazines, online sites and broadcast programs were added to the competition.”
Additioanlly, a number of middle school boys have been recognized as finalists in the 2023 individual Junior High/Middle School competition. Please see the listing below.
Congratulations to Christina Hammitt, newspaper advisor and English 8 teacher, the faculty and staff at the Middle School for Boys, and of course the talented and hard-working students on this exceptional recognition.
