Junior Kindergarten partners with US Environmental Science Class.
On an Outdoor Adventure Day in early March, Junior Kindergarteners in Holli Mason, Kate Schallhorn and Shauna Macauley’s class were playing in the woods when they noticed large buckets attached to tubes coming out of certain trees. The students wondered what they were. After the class later spent time learning how to identify different types of trees, they turned to Upper School expert Matt Gump and his environmental science class. A few weeks later the Upper School and JK students met in the woods and enjoyed a lesson and demonstration about maple trees, sap, and the process of turning sap into maple syrup. The younger children helped the older students drill and tap a tree and were sent back to the ECC with a jar of maple syrup, from an earlier batch, to taste.
