“War” at Snake Rock

Students apply lessons from ancient Sun Tzu treatise in a "battle" at the iconic Cranbrook feature.

In Caralie Cooke’s recent China unit in 9th grade Worldviews and Civilizations, students played Capture the Flag to apply what they learned from reading The Art of War by Sun Tzu.  Students read and then worked together to plan their strategy based on the book.

Students then employed the strategy by playing Capture the Flag at Snake Rock. They used strategies such as spying, utilizing the high ground, and waiting to attack until the enemy was weakened.

After the "war," students reflected on The Art of War and how their strategy worked in practice.

One student said, "My main takeaway from Sun Tzu’s Art of War is that it is important to always be two steps ahead of your enemy and to analyze and know what the opponent’s next move is."
