Feminist Thought Class Goes Back in Time

Working in the Cranbrook Archives and STEAM lab, students reconstruct the evolving culture at Cranbrook.
The culminating project for Elizabeth Ryan’s course The History of Feminist Thought in the Modern World is a class public history exhibit. All students work as a team to research, create, and install an exhibit about the impact of Feminist Thought at Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School from the 1940s to the 1990s.

The class uses Cranbrook Archives and the STEAM Lab to produce a unique interpretation of the topic based on archival evidence. The project is a visual examination of the changes brought about in the culture of CKUS due to Second Wave Feminism of the late 1960s and 1970s. Students use the Archives to identify sources that trace changes in the culture of the school, class curricula, and clubs and sports.

The class hopes to have the project installed before March 2023 for Women’s History Month.
