A Call for the Endowment of HUB

Opportunity. It’s a word we see every day but rarely pause to contemplate. Nor do we stop and consider how much strength it takes to make the most of the opportunities that find us. For the young people of Cranbrook ’s Horizons-Upward Bound (HUB) program, taking hold of an opportunity and making the most of it is what drives them in their efforts toward academic success and achievement.
It is this pursuit of excellence that has helped more than 2,000 young men and women become the first members of their families to attend college – all because of HUB, one of the oldest and largest Upward Bound programs in the United States.

Since its inception, Horizons-Upward Bound has been an integral part of Cranbrook, embodying the philosophy of “aim high.” From the first day they enroll in the program, HUB students are indeed looking ahead and aiming high. That is evident in the time they spend in the classroom, going to their own schools five days a week, attending HUB classes on Saturdays and taking part in a six-week residential program on the Cranbrook campus each summer. Being a HUB student involves enormous commitment. For graduates of HUB, though, the effort is worth every early morning, every school-bound Saturday, every late night spent studying. In the end, the future is brighter because of what they have achieved.

And not only does Horizons-Upward Bound benefit today’s students, it helps tomorrow’s as well. Every economically disadvantaged young person who finds success in college and beyond paves the way for hundreds more young people to follow. HUB graduates help spread the word about the program to other families. They inspire emulation and a drive to success. They are living proof that opportunity and dedication are a powerful combination that can change lives.

HUB benefits, too, from an exceptional support team of staff, volunteers, alumni and benefactors, starting with founder Ben Snyder, former director Bill Washington, and current director Dr. Eddie Green. Together, this support team works to create the kind of intellectual, emotional and administrative safety net necessary to help young people navigate their way through high school, college and life. From college counseling and college tours to mentoring opportunities and outdoor Wilderness-style expeditions, HUB reaches beyond the classroom to help students find and fulfill their true potential.

As Cranbrook Schools continues to make great strides in The Campaign For Cranbrook, so too does Horizons-Upward Bound as staff work to raise funds in support of an endowment that will ensure the program’s future. Despite a dedicated cadre of donors and friends, HUB is still vulnerable to fluctuations in Upward Bound funding from the federal government. With a fully-funded endowment, Horizons-Upward Bound would be able to continue providing extraordinary opportunities to children in need for years to come.

For more than four decades, Cranbrook and Horizons-Upward Bound have worked together in the interest of helping promising students achieve success in college and life. Hearing from HUB alumni and watching the students on campus each summer, it becomes apparent that Horizons-Upward Bound is more than just an educational program. It is a resource that changes futures and changes lives.
