The Wolverine Experience is an outdoor camp that teaches the social and team-building skills that are so important in Middle School. It is a five day program that takes place at Wolverine Camps in northern Michigan, located about fifteen miles from the Mackinac Bridge. Wolverine Camps is a private camp placed on about 350 acres of land that used to be a fish hatchery. The boys sleep in a converted school house in rooms that sleep about 20 people. About a quarter of a mile away is the lodge where meals are served. Each student is responsible for his own personal sleeping space and camp chores as well. Each day begins at 8:00 AM and the boys are active until about 8:00 PM.

The sixth grade class is separated into four activity groups. These groups are designed to mix up the social groups that already exist in school, so that the students have the chance to form new friendships. Each class chooses from the available activities when the trip is still in the planning phase. Although all of the activities center around cooperation and teamwork, the boys have the opportunity to pick options that suit their interests.

There is also a history component to the experience, including classes on pioneer life. The students create toys that young boys in pioneer days would have used. They also make a three legged stool using authentic pioneer tools. Students learn about Native American life as well through games and songs. Cross-country skiing, dog sledding, and snow shoeing are popular outdoor winter options that everyone enjoys. The boys make candles, beef jerky, and buckskin bread during the indoor options.

Cooperation is necessary during all activities but it is most evident in the challenge options that are always favorites of the students. They complete a ropes course with the help of their classmates and scale a wall without any adult assistance. They are charged with spotting their teammates at all times, so that everyone is part of the solution to the challenge. These activities are the climax of the five day experience. Each boy leaves camp feeling pride in his own accomplishments as well as trust in his classmates.
