Cathartic and Didactic
Aesthetics classes consider Milles through the lens of Aristotle.
On recent sunny February days, Upper School Aesthetics classes took place around the Orpheus Fountain near Cranbrook Art Museum. The question they considered; if Aristotle were to visit Cranbrook, how would he interpret these sculptures?
Classes spent time learning about Carl Milles’s vision and how the sculptures depict emotions and ideals of the human creative spirit in a way that Aristotle would appreciate. Beethoven has the face of an aged man but the body of a youthful athlete, symbolizing his artistic immortality.
Aristotle may have also appreciated that, after 2,350 years, students are still reading his books.
