LET’S ROCK!

Second graders discover Michigan’s geological history by exploring Cranbrook’s campus.

Second graders in April Antczak’s science class learn about the rock cycle and Michigan’s geological history. To bring this to life, students stop at several locations around Kingswood Lake and the Japanese Garden to find their own rock that is interesting to them for whatever reason. Back in class, the rocks are drawn, examined, and classified.

April notes that “Finding their own specimen on campus is a fun exploration of our spaces and a way to connect the geological heritage of our campus to the larger learning about the rock cycle. They become VERY attached to their specimens!”
