An 'Off' Shooting Night and a Quality Opponent Made for a Worrisome Combo Tuesday Night
Bill Hancock
The Junior Cranes who, normally, have very reliable shooting within the paint, struggled to find their stroke on Tuesday night. Shooting only 35% from 2-point range (most coming from within the key area) and 18% from long-distance, the Cranes were able to squeak out a victory against a very well-coached team from Greenhills on Tuesday night. Greenhills brought a squad of eight players who gave our boys everything they could handle. They were aggressive, disciplined and very determined to avenge their 20-point loss on their home court. Jordan Roebuck hitting his 1-and-1 foul shots at the end of the game with less than ten seconds to go, put the game out of reach for Greenhills and sealed the victory for Cranbrook.
Throughout the evening, both teams exchanged the lead several times. Fortunately for Cranbrook, our players stayed relatively disciplined in their pressure defenses and did not commit that many fouls. They also notched 14 steals or defensive tips, and we had two blocked shots on the night. The junior Cranes also kept their turnovers to a more reasonable number (13) while the defense led to 17 turnovers by Greenhills.
The surprising storyline of the evening was the anemic shooting, fortunately, by both teams. Roebuck lead all scorers with 11 points; he was followed by Bousamra (9), Kerr (7), Hauxwell (6), Doran (2) and Purther (2). While not as prolific with their rebounding as they were during the Foley game, the junior Cranes controlled the boards, especially in the second half of the game. Leading rebounders were Roebuck (8), Kerr (7), Purther (6), Hauxwell (4) and Bousamra (4). Doran, Vespa, and Harrison also contributed to the rebounding stats, pulling down one or two rebounds apiece.
The boys look forward to traveling to Shrine on Friday for a very tough game against another quality league opponent. The boys have come to understand that there are no easy ones on the schedule from here on out so, Go Cranes!! Aim High!!!
