CK Men's Rowing Wins State Championships! Women's Pair Snags the Bronze!

Coach German
Cranbrook Kingswood Rowing won state championships in the men's single and men's double at the Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan Championships in Grand Rapids on May 20. In addition, the women's pair won the bronze medal, and the men's junior 8+ and men's lightweight 8+ advanced to the finals.

Senior captain Josh Hartman won the men's single final over Orchard Lake St. Mary's, Northville, Saline, Ann Arbor Pioneer, and Forest Hills Central. Hartman finished 2nd in the morning qualifying heat.

Hartman and junior Will Van Houten won the men's double in dominating fashion, 14 seconds over second place Orchard Lake St. Mary's. Northville, Forest Hills Eastern, Saline, and Riverview rounded out the field in the final. The CK duo also won the qualifying heat earlier in the day.

The women's pair of seniors Paige Brand and Tess Coleman won the bronze medal out of five boats in the event.

The men's lightweight 8+ (Sam Leslie, Patrick Baker, Wyatt Dudgeon, Isaac Cantin, David Zhu, Masaki Ito, Gio Esquivel, Josh Diamond, Julian Wray) won their morning heat in very exciting fashion, with the top three boats finishing within one second of each other, and 4th and 5th place only 3 seconds behind. In the afternoon final, the Cranes finished in a close 4th place, behind Forest Hills Central, Trenton, and Pioneer, and ahead of Forest Hills Northern and Orchard Lake St. Mary's.

The men's junior 8+ (Skyler Knapp, W. Van Houten, James Sabella, P. Baker, Thomas Libcke, Neil Patrick, Kinan Wagner, Cantin, Zhu) followed a similar trajectory. They finished 2nd of 6 in their heat and 5th of 6 in the final.

In the women's lightweight 4+ and junior 4+ events, there were three qualifying heats, which meant that the top two boats in each heat advanced to the final. In both events, CK drew the "fast heat." The light 4+ (Emily Liu, Cate Hofley, Clarissa Babila, Grace Li, Lauren Baker) was 4th of 5 in their heat, but they had the 5th fastest time in the heats overall. The junior 4+ (Liu, Hofley, Nicole Hua, Li, L. Baker) was even closer; they finished 3rd of 5 in their heat, just 1.5 seconds--less than half a boat length--behind Pioneer. They had the 4th fastest time in the heats out of 15 total entries.

In the women's single, Tess Coleman became the first CK female athlete to compete in the single. She finished 4th in her heat.

The men's junior 4+ (Bruce Yang, Addison Wang, Long Tran, Andrew Tran, Alec Palo) finished 4th of 6 in their heat and continued to build on this crew's experience from the Midwest Championships.

The men's and women's freshman 4s stepped into a championship regatta for the first time and gained great experience for next year. The women (Julia Bolukh, Sophie Cronk, Hye-Jin Kang, Emma Van Houten, Angie Kwon) finished 5th of 6 in their heat, and the men (Nicholas Rhodes, Trey O'Hara, Jerome Wiater, Thomas Chang, Casey Kim) finished 4th of 5 in their heat.

The men's varsity 4+ (Yang, Austin Rose, Jason Chen, Harley Guo, Willy Wong) also gained good experience, finishing a close 5th in their heat.

The state championship regatta ends the season for the team, but the men's double will continue on and compete at the SRAA Nationals on May 26-27 and the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association Championships on June 2-4.
