Cranbrook-Kingswood Swim Team claims third-straight Division 3 Title
The Cranbrook-Kingswood Swim Team was awarded the team state title for the third year in a row due to its outstanding performance at the 2016 Division 3 Swimming and Diving State Finals. The event took place at Eastern Michigan University on Saturday, March 12.
Cranbrook-Kingswood had far more scoring swimmers than any other team in the pool due to the team’s incredible depth, winning with 352 points over East Grand Rapids’ 315 and Chelsea’s 195. "It was our only shot, (it) was the depth," Cranbrook-Kingswood coach Karl Hodgson said. "We swam so great yesterday (in the semifinals) . . . To duplicate that, it was going to be tough but the guys sucked it up and hung on."
It wasn’t until the second-to-last event that the Cranes were declared State Champions.
Senior Giorgio DelGrosso earned champion status in the 100 yard backstroke by winning in 55.92. His time broke Division 3 records, beating the previous 2013 record by 0.2 seconds. "It feels really good," DelGrosso said. "Especially senior year—that was my last event of high school. That was really important to me.”
DelGrosso's achievement solidified the team’s top status in the competition and helped them to maintain the position they had held throughout the event. Overall, it was a full team effort that brought the Cranes so much success. Swimmers Matthew Yang, Kevin Hao and Gabe Cohen also placed in the top eight with DelGrosso in the 100 backstroke. The team had four scoring swimmers in the 500 freestyle, as well as three scorers in another race.
