Cranbrook Kingwood JV and Varsity v. Brother Rice JV and Varsity
Cranbrook Schools’ Wallace Ice Arena
In a continuation of Cranbrook Kingswood Hockey’s long standing tradition of giving back to the community by creating a special theme hockey game and fundraiser to benefit a charity, Cranbrook will play Brother Rice on Friday, February 15th at The Wallace Ice Arena. This event will benefit Beaumont Hospital’s Student Athlete Healthy Heart Check Program. This program is dedicated to saving the lives of student athletes by providing them with free heart screenings to identify undetected heart problems.
Currently, both teams are ranked #1 in their respective divisions (Brother Rice: Division I, Cranbrook: Division III) by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association (MHSHCA) polls. The teams skated to a 2 – 2 tie in late December. The game will also celebrate the 39 year Cranbrook vs. Brother Rice hockey rivalry with both teams sporting their vintage uniforms.

The theme game is an event the players look forward to each season, “We are excited about the game and the events leading up to it. The Cranbrook – Brother Rice hockey rivalry is a natural, a lot of the players played with and against each other growing up. This will add a new dimension to it,” explained Cranbrook Head Coach, Andy Weidenbach.
Brother Rice Head Coach Lou Schmidt added his viewpoint, “It’s always a great game for a great cause when Cranbrook and Brother Rice get together for what has become an annual benefit hockey game. I would expect another fast paced, hard hitting, back and forth game. They are always fun to be part of from both a coaches and players perspective. We are looking forward to it.”
According to Lacey Sapkiewicz, MHSA, Director, Heart & Vascular Business Development
Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak this event is a great opportunity, “The goal/mission of the Healthy Heart Check Program (www.heart.beaumont.edu/student-screening), a student screening developed by Beaumont Health System, is to help detect for signs of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or other abnormal heart structures/rhythms that could lead to sudden cardiac arrest. Beaumont offers 3 large screenings per year for high school age students (13-17) free of charge. This includes a medical history evaluation, blood pressure check, physician exam, electrocardiogram (ECG), and quick look echocardiogram. These events are completely supported by the generous hard work and dedication of volunteers and all money raised by the
Cranbrook and Brother Rice game will directly flow back into the supplies and operations of Healthy Heart Check, making it possible for us to offer this service to the community. We are grateful for the support of our community and groups that choose to help support our program.”
Some results of the program so far show how important their mission is:
- 8,663 kids in Michigan have been screened
- 794 needed some sort of follow up with a doctor
- 51 were advised to stop sports until they follow up with a cardiologist
- 4 have been found with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most serious of all heart issues
An additional event on the Cranbrook Kingswood campus has also opted to be part of the fundraising: The CK Varsity (7:30 PM) and JV (6:00 PM) basketball teams will play Clarenceville on Friday, February 15th at the Keppel Gymnasium-Cranbrook Campus. Proceeds from those games will be donated to Beaumont Hospital’s Student Athlete Healthy Heart Check Program as well.
