The results have been published for the 2012 Scholastic Art Awards, and Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School students enjoyed their most successful showing ever.
It is an extraordinary year for Cranbrook: every member of the upper school fine arts faculty had students recognized at the Gold Key level. Students also took the top prize with both an American Vision Award and Gold Key Portfolio Best in Show - some of the most coveted awards in the nation.
The American Vision Award winners are chosen as the “Best of Show” from all of the artwork entered in this year’s Southeastern Michigan Regional competition. Each regional program across the country selects the five most outstanding works of art from their Gold Key recipients. These five young artists represent the region on the national level as American Vision nominees. A national panel selects one of the nominated works from each region as the American Vision Award Recipient for 2012.
The last time a Cranbrook Student received an American Vision Award was 2010.
A total of 16 Gold Keys, 7 Silver Keys, and 10 Certificates will be presented to the student artists at the awards ceremony on February 11 at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.
According to Director of Schools Arlyce Seibert, “In my tenure, I am not sure that I have seen this level of performance by our students and faculty. This is a very special accomplishment.”
“At Cranbrook, we teach our students to make art that is both personal and universal, hoping to reach a wide audience,” said Head of the Fine Arts Department Gary Kulak. “We focus the student’s attention on originality, not on something that looks like art.”
