The Crane-Clarion Recognized Again for Excellence

The 2007-2008 Crane-Clarion continues to take top national awards.

In April the Crane was awarded a First Place distinction from the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA), scoring perfectly in the categories of content coverage and general plan, leading to a score of 950 out of a possible 1000 points.

The ASPA also named the Crane one of only seven recipients nationally of the Most Outstanding High School Newspaper award for 2007-2008. It was the only paper named in the state of Michigan.

Earlier in the year, the Crane received the prestigious Pacemaker Award for the first time in the paper’s history from the National Scholastic Press Association, along with a First Place award with three marks of distinction (in coverage and content, layout and design, and school leadership). This was the third year in a row the Crane took this award.

The Crane also received a First Place/Gold Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, the sixth Gold Medal the Crane has earned in the last seven years, the fifth in a row.

“We believe that we have been winning awards at least in part because we have learned to listen to and benefit from the judges’ critiques,” stated outgoing Managing Editor Scott Rich, CK '08, who is heading off to Duke University.

The final issue of the year, the prestigious Commencement & Awards special issue, will be available at the Senior Awards Assembly on June 5 and commencement on June 6, and contains spring news, arts, and sports coverage; the farewells to Cranbrook from senior editors; a complete list of all student and faculty awards; and a complete list of the college choices of Cranbrook Kingswood seniors.

Subscriptions for the 2008-09 year are $20 and can be ordered from Mothers’ Council representative Chevelle Roman, 1352 Galena Drive, Rochester Hills, MI 48306.
