Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Executive Director Jack Roberts visited Cranbrook Kingswood on Thursday to speak about "The Value of Scholastic Sports." The MHSAA is the association that governs all middle school and high school sports in Michigan.
Mr. Roberts began by talking about how his parents encouraged him when he was a child, not only in athletics but also in other extracurricular activities. He then spoke about what different constituents - mothers, fathers, coaches, and students - wanted most from an athletics program and how to instill everyone's values into athletics. Mr. Roberts detailed some of the improvements to middle school and high school athletics that the MHSAA was working on as well.
After his inspiring speech, Mr. Roberts answered questions from the audience about the state of high school sports in Michigan, including topics such as the change in seasons for some sports.
Mr. Roberts attended Dartmouth College, majoring in English and graduating in 1970. While at Dartmouth, he played in every football game of his sophomore through senior seasons and was the starting defensive safety for most of three seasons on the Ivy League's most winning team.
In more than 20 years at the helm of the MHSAA, Mr. Roberts has implemented programs to improve communications to and from the 1,550 member schools, 12,000 registered officials, and 13,000 head coaches. He has inspired the membership to address the most critical issues of athletics and especially to improve sportsmanship.
During the past 35 years, Mr. Roberts has spoken to educators and athletic groups and business leaders and civic groups in more than 40 states and five Canadian provinces. He is a prolific writer who has been published frequently in athletic, educational and general journals and newspapers, and he has published two books. Mr. Roberts has developed a reputation as one of the nation’s most articulate advocates for the value to students, schools and society of comprehensive and balanced interscholastic activities programs.
Mr. Robert's wife, Peggy, (BS - Iowa State, MS - Northern Illinois) is coordinator of a collaborative of nonprofit, human services agencies in mid-Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts have two sons, John (31) who is pursuing a doctoral degree in education policy at Harvard, and Luke (28) who is employed at Columbia International University in Columbia, South Carolina.
