2007 Fall Season Athletic Team Summary

The fall athletic teams enjoyed many successes including conference championships in boys cross country, girls swimming & diving and volleyball and the boys soccer team won the Metro Conference tournament championship. Daniel Suber was the Metro Conference boys cross country medalist/player of the year. The girls swimming and diving team placed 3rd at the MHSAA meet. Relay swimmers Maeve McHugh, Rachel Dekar, Joan Burton and Taylor Abbott won the 200 Medley Relay event. Individual swimmers took top honors in three individual events. Rachel Dekar won the 200 I.M and the 100 Breaststroke and Maeve McHugh won the 100 Backstroke. The boys tennis team placed 5th at their MHSAA championship where #3 singles player Austin Armstrong won his flight.

All academic honors to date have awarded to the field hockey, girls golf, volleyball, and boys soccer teams.

Senior tennis star Shannon Mathews signed a NCAA Letter of Intent to attend Notre Dame University where she will play tennis.

Shannon, Nicholas Andersen, Sean Collon and Christine Vlasic are our nominees for the MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award.

Cranbrook Kingswood is in first place in the Metro Conference All-Sports Trophy competition at the close of the fall sports season.

Boys Cross Country

The boy's team easily won the Metro Conference championship by winning both jamboree meets and the conference meet for the fourth year in a row. Making first team all Metro Conference were medalist/Player of the Year Daniel Suber, Nick Andersen, and Ben Broer. Earning second team honors were Jackson Sui, Max Acheson, and Andre Dompierre. One hundred forty-two competitive efforts from twenty team members yielded thirty-three new personal records. Five boys ran to top twenty by class times (Acheson, Andersen, Broer, Suber, Sui). The lone Cranbrook qualifier to the MHSAA Final meet was Daniel Suber who finished four seconds out of All State honors.

Most Valuable: Dan Suber & Nicholas Andersen; Most Improved: Jackson Sui.

Girls Cross Country

The girls' team finished second place in the Metro Conference for the third year in a row. Andrea Gumushian closed out her career by making first team All Conference for the third year in a row. Lexi Fournier and Rachel Samrah both were named All Conference, second team. These same three runners also made the top-twenty by-class list, Gumushian and Samrah on the senior list and Fournier on the junior list. Fifteen team members established eighty competitive efforts, ten percent of which were personal records.

Most Valuable: Andrea Gumushian; Coaches Award: Hali Greene & Leah Varga.

Field Hockey – The team finished their year with a 6-5-6 record. 1st team All State honors went to Rebekah Ostosh and Nana Kirkuchi; honorable mention to Carolyn Gard. The team was once again selected as an All Academic Team by the coaches association for their collective GPA of greater than 3.5 for the third year in a row. Three team members earned individual All Academic awards for GPA’s above 3.7: Candice Ammori, Carolyn Gard, Ellora Gupta and Danielle Thomasma.

Most Valuable: Rebekah Ostosh; Most Improved: Ellora Gupta; Coaches Award: Candice Ammori; Virginia Dawson Award: Carolyn Gard.

Football – The team completed its regular season with a 3-6 record, 3-4 in the Metro Conference. Kojo Appiah led the team with 1000 yards rushing on 124 carries for an 8.07 yards per carry average. Steven Siegel and Dakota Sherman led the team in receiving. All Metro Conference 1st team: Justin Cameron and Kojo Appiah; 2nd team: Stephen Peck, David Dietz and Zack Bobowski. Kojo and Justin were also selected to the honorable mention All District Team. Steven Siegel was also awarded Academic All State honors.

Most Valuable: Kojo Appiah; Most Improved: Stephen Peck; Coaches Award: Jeffrey Savin; Unsung Hero Award: Aaron Robins.

Girls Golf – The program included a record 25 golfers, 18 of whom were competing in their first year of high school competition. The varsity team included four juniors and four freshmen, with only two girls having past varsity experience. The team’s record was 3-6 under new head coach Mark Moyer. The team was honored as Academic All-State.

Most Valuable: Seung-min Lee; Most Improved: Ka Nam; Coaches Award: Caroline Shinkle.

Boys Soccer – The team completed its regular season with a 10-5-1 record,

8-2-1 in Metro Conference play. The team finished second in the Metro Conference but won the season-ending tournament in an exciting shoot-out victory. Post season awards – Jayant Trewn: All Metro Conference 1st team and All District 1st team, Suk-Hoon Choi: All Metro Conference 1st team, All District 1st team; Daniel Ko: All Metro Conference 1st team, All District 1st team, Jeremy Brill: All Metro Conference 1st team; All Metro Conference second team included: Jeffrey Hammond and Doo Young Na. The team earned All State Academic recognition.

Most Valuable: Jayant Trewn; Most Improved: Doo Young Na and Daniel Ko; Coaches Award: Ryan Drews; Lalas Award: Andrew Holmes.

Girls Swimming & Diving The team was once again Independent Schools League Champions, a title they have held since the league was created ten years ago. At the MHSAA Division III State Meet the team was in 4th place going into the final relay, but swam a great race and captured the 3rd place trophy. State championships were captured by the 200 Medley Relay - Maeve McHugh, Rachel Dekar, Joan Burton and Taylor Abbott finished with the time of 1:49.51, an Automatic All-American time. The 200 Free Relay (Taylor Abbott, Alex Miller, Rosemary O'Connor, Anna Brown) tied for 6th place. The 400 Freestyle Relay (Joan Burton, Anna Brown, Rachel Dekar, Maeve McHugh) took 3rd place. Swimmers took top honors in three individual events. Rachel Dekar won the 200 I.M. (2:11.73) and the 100 Breaststroke (1:04.88). She achieved an Automatic All-American time in the breaststroke and is 1st place All-Division in the event. Maeve McHugh won the 100 Backstroke (59.00) and placed 2nd in the 100 Free. Anna Brown placed 8th in the 200 Free and 12th in the 500 Free. Taylor Abbott took 14th place in the 50 Free, Brie Sherer took 14th in the 100 Backstroke and Joan Burton placed 16th in the 100 Fly.

Most Valuable: Joan Burton; Most Improved: Taylor Abbott, Coaches: Rachel Dekar – Swimming and Meagan Davis – Diving.

Boys Tennis – The team finished their season with a 9-1-5 record, their most successful season in a number of years. They placed third in the Regional meet and then 5th at the MHSAA championships. Austin Armstrong at #3 singles won the championship (24-1 for the season); #4 singles Jeff LoDuca was a finalist and #4 doubles Jake Chelios and Corey Goldstein were semifinalists. Adrian Gudra and Vincent Kim (#1 doubles), Austin Lo (#1 singles) and Eric Rouff (#2 singles) were selected to the All State team.

Most Valuable: Austin Armstrong; Most Improved: Eric Rouff; Coaches Award: Michael Pogoda.

Volleyball –The team completed their season with a 13-6 record, 6-2 in Metro Conference regular season play under new head coach Jeff Miller. The team won the Private School Volleyball Tournament, the Greenhills School Invitation Tournament and the Metro Conference Tournament and the overall Metro championship. The team lost in the District final. All Metro selections included Paige Simmons, Katherine Blessing and Lauren Stankovich (1st team); Ashley Leinweber and Ariel Roddy (2nd team). Paige, Katherine and Kelley Pace were selected honorable mention All Area. The team earned All State Academic recognition. Most Valuable Paige Simmons.  Coaches awards:  Kate Blessing and Alana Barden.  Most improved was Amana Colley.
