Athletics at Cranbrook Schools: "Aim High"

At Cranbrook, students don’t have to choose between a strong education and a serious athletic experience. They can pursue both.

With 29 varsity teams, outstanding facilities, successful programs, and opportunities for athletes at different levels, Cranbrook gives students the chance to compete at a high level while taking full advantage of the rest of the school experience.

Cranbrook students are scholars, artists, musicians, leaders, and athletes. They compete for championships, continue their careers in college, and join an athletic tradition that has produced Olympians, professional athletes, national-team members, All-Americans, and leaders across the sports world.

About the Program

Excellence and Opportunity – on and off the field.

List of 3 items.

  • A Tradition of Excellence

For generations, Cranbrook student-athletes have competed successfully at the high school, collegiate, national, and professional levels.

Cranbrook teams have won more than 100 state championships. Our alumni include Heisman Trophy winner Pete Dawkins ’55 and Tewaaraton Award winner Izzy Scane ’19, winners of two of the most prestigious individual awards in college sports. Cranbrook graduates have competed professionally, represented the United States in international competition, earned All-America honors, and built careers throughout the sports world.

Athletics at Cranbrook are about more than wins and awards.
Competition teaches students how to prepare, lead, handle adversity, work with teammates, and commit to something bigger than themselves. Those lessons are an important part of the Cranbrook experience.

What our students accomplish here matters. So does where the experience takes them next.
  • An Extraordinary Place to Compete

Few schools offer an athletic setting quite like Cranbrook.

The Thompson Oval, with Del Walden Field at its center, is unlike any high school athletic venue in the country. Its setting, history, and architecture make it one of the most distinctive places to compete on campus.

The Cranbrook Tennis Complex and Williams Natatorium have earned recognition for their design and quality. Wallace Ice Arena has been home to generations of Cranbrook hockey players, including athletes who later competed in the NHL.

Cranbrook’s new Athletic Performance Center was designed to support the way athletes train today, with a focus on injury prevention, speed, agility, strength, and overall performance. It gives students a place to train more effectively and become faster, stronger, and more durable athletes.

The Lower Fields, Keppel Gymnasium, and other athletic spaces across campus add to a collection of facilities that reflects both Cranbrook’s history and its investment in athletics.

These are places where students train, compete, win championships, spend time with teammates, and build memories that stay with them long after they leave Cranbrook.
  • Beyond the Game

Being a serious athlete at Cranbrook doesn’t mean being only an athlete.

We encourage multi-sport participation and want students to take advantage of the range of opportunities available here. A Cranbrook athlete can compete for a championship, perform on stage, join a student organization, try something new, and challenge themselves in the classroom.

That range of experiences is part of what makes Cranbrook different.

Athletics are not separate from the education students receive here. They are part of it.

Athletics at Middle School

The Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School athletic program provides opportunities for both novice and skilled athletes. Teamwork, skill development, self-discipline, sportsmanship and commitment are important elements in all of the options offered. The school year is divided into three athletic seasons - fall, winter and spring - furnishing many opportunities for involvement at various skill levels.

The athletic program at Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School is under the supervision of the Middle School Athletic Director. The director’s office is housed at the Vaughan Campus. Inquiries regarding the athletic program may be made directly to this office by calling (248) 645-3108.

For convenience, parents may call a special middle school Athletic Hotline. The hotline contains pre-recorded information relevant to daily games and practice schedules. In the event of inclement weather, parents are encouraged to call the Athletic Hotline, (248) 645-3578 after 2:00 p.m. for updates about canceled games or practices.

Middle School Intramurals

Designed for sixth graders, the intramural program introduces athletes to the rules of various sports. Experienced coaches help to foster skill development in a comfortable and non-competitive environment. Each sport is incorporated into a four-week program that includes two weeks of skills and drills, followed by two to three weeks of intramural game activity. The program may include some scrimmages with sixth graders in the intramural programs of neighboring schools.

Middle School Interscholatic Teams

Our middle school also participates in the more competitive interscholastic sports league. Interscholatic team offerings include:

Baseball Soccer
Basketball Softball
Cross Country Swim and Dive
Field Hockey Tennis
Football Track and Field
Lacrosse Volleyball
