GMS Students learn from Kingswood Pen Pals

Middle school students spent the semester learning more about the history of Cranbrook and developing a deeper understanding of the educational philosophies, traditions, art and architecture that created the foundation for the schools. At the Girls Middle School, alumnae faculty Loren Roumell '99 and Shannon Howell Johnson '00 connected students in the class with Kingswood Pen Pals from classes that spanned eight decades.

Susan Hubbard Spademan '48, Anne Smith Towbes '65, Leslie Schimpke Johnston ’64, Lora Morton '67, Darnell Carr Newsum '73, Pam Benjamin Blank ’75, Julie Rodecker ’77, Paula Jo Kemler ’77, Beth Hagenlocker ’82, Sandy Tsai Yoo '90, Monique Vann-Brown ’92, Sharmili Hazra Edwards '98, Catherine Schoichet ’00, Stefanie Spiro Pohl '03, Whitley Granberry ’06, Jillian Williams ’10 and Brooke Ballard ’16 were each paired with a GMS student and exchanged letters throughout the semester, exchanging anecdotes about Kingswood life and plentiful opportunities to compare the different eras.

In addition to learning about student life from a personal perspective, the faculty took students all over campus to learn more about Cranbrook Educational Community. Field trips included a visit to archives, tours of Brookside , Saarinen House and the Japanese Garden, the Kingswood Bowling alleys and more. As these students matriculate to the Upper School they will surely be resources for their classmates in their knowledge of campus and the history behind it.
