Exploring Cranbrook!

MSB and MSG students learn Cranbrook history first hand.

“Exploring Cranbrook” is a new elective at both Middle Schools, taught by Rebecca Hattner, Loren Roumell, Jennifer Dawson, and Shannon Johnson. Students learn about Cranbrook founders George and Ellen Scripps Booth and the vision they realized in their lifetimes. They also experience the history, people, stories, architecture, art, and landscape of Cranbrook by leaving their classrooms most days and going to the locations to see for themselves.

In Ms. Hattner’s class this spring experts from the Center for Collections and Research gave tours of Smith House, Saarinen House, Thornlea, Cranbrook House, and the Japanese Garden. They also visited the Archives to view primary sources including blueprints, photographs, notes, lists, and newspaper articles. A true place-based education!
