Philanthropy in Action: A New Chapter for Thompson Oval

At Cranbrook, meaningful progress is rarely the work of one person. On the field, success requires preparation, persistence, and people working together toward a shared goal. The same is true of philanthropy.

That spirit of teamwork is now on full display at historic Thompson Oval, where a new turf field has been installed through the generosity of donors to the 2026 Window to the World Gala paddle raise.

Because of their support, Cranbrook students will have an exceptional place to compete, practice, and play.

The transformation happened quickly. In just four weeks, crews removed the old turf, installed and stitched together the new surface, and carefully worked specialized infill throughout the field. Originally scheduled to take five weeks, the project was completed a week early—and just in time for the start of fall practices.

The most significant improvements extend well beneath what spectators will see.

The previous field relied on crumb-rubber infill. The new system uses a special pad underneath the field and a combination of sand and GeoFill, a more sustainable material made from coconut husks. In addition to reducing the use of synthetic materials, GeoFill is designed to keep the playing surface significantly cooler—at least 30 degrees cooler on a hot day.

Annual impact testing, routine inspections, repairs, and replenishment of the GeoFill will help ensure the field remains safe and performs at a high level for years to come.

Now, the new Thompson Oval is ready for what it was built for: Cranbrook students, teams, and community members coming together.
