Bill Hancock

Senior Associate Dean of College Counseling

Bill Hancock came to the Cranbrook Schools with his family in 1998 and served for six years as Dean of College Counseling before moving into the Associate, and now Senior Associate, position. Bill has reprised his role as Dean several times over the years, but he is happy to return to serving as Senior Associate Dean because it allows him to focus on working primarily with students. In addition to his duties in College Counseling, Bill serves as an Assistant House Adviser in the Cranbrook Residence Hall, an Assistant Coach for the Varsity Girls Basketball team, and an Advisor for the Senior Project. In 2012, Bill was recognized by The Cranbrook Educational Community with the President’s Award for Excellence; in 2016, Bill and his wife, Winnie, were recognized with the All School’s Faculty Award for Excellence; in 2018, Bill was recognized by the Michigan Association for College Admission Counseling with the Gramenz Award, the Association’s highest distinction for service; and in 2020, he received the Howard and Sally Wert Acestes Award for dedication to the Schools’ Community.  Prior to Cranbrook, Bill served in leadership, teaching, and coaching positions at Hilton Head Preparatory School and The Hill School, and before that, in the admission offices at Allegheny and Union colleges.

Bill stays active professionally by serving as a member of the Michigan Association for College Admission Counseling’s (MACAC) Past-Presidents’ Council, Maggie Miller Scholarship Committee, and Conference Planning Committee. For the past sixteen years, he has been on the faculty of the Royal Thai Scholar Summer Orientation Program.

Bill lives with his wife, Winnie, in the Cranbrook Residence Hall; this year marks their twentieth year living in Coulter, and his twenty-eighth year serving in the residential program.  Winnie is an active part of the Cranbrook Schools faculty, serving in the Early Childhood Center.  Their two boys, Evan and Brendan, are members of the CK Classes of '06 and '09, respectively.
