Cranbrook Upper School students have distinguished themselves in recent weeks across a range of prestigious – and highly competitive – science options at the state and regional level, with several already qualifying for national contests.
Genius Olympiad
CK Freshman Kevin (Tianqi) Yuan was accepted as a Genius Olympiad Finalist. Genius Olympiad is an international high school project competition about environmental issues, founded and organized by Terra Science and Education and hosted by the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Kevin will present his project titled Air Pollution Source Detection and Tracking Quadcopter UAV at the 2024 Final Competition on June 10th at Rochester Institute of Technology.
Junior Science and Humanities Symposium
Five CK students participated in a full-day event and presented their research at the Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium which is supported by the US Army Education Outreach Program and hosted by Wayne State University. This science competition took place on February 23.
Two students won final awards and were invited to attend and present at the National Symposium in Albuquerque, New Mexico this May. These were 3rd Place award winner Michael Hua (for KTV Transformer: A Novel Multi-scale Knowledge Transfer Vision Transformer for 3D Brain Vessel Segmentation), Grade 9, and 5th Place winner Vineet Saravanan (for Novel Integrated System for Segmentation and Analysis of Intracranial Arteries and Aneurysms Using Convolutional Neural Networks and Computational Fluid Dynamics), Grade 11.
Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit
A record number of Cranbrook students participated this year in the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit. The process included completing a research project, preparing their research presentations, and going through an entire day of interviews with experts and professionals in the field.
The students garnered a Grand Prize award, three first place awards, two second place awards, and four third place awards. Many of these students will bring their presentations to the Michigan Science Fair to try and earn a spot at the International Science and Engineering Fair.
Chemistry Olympiad Exam
A record number of Cranbrook students recently participated in the regional qualifying competition for the national Chemistry Olympiad Exam. Final results are still pending.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in these demanding competitions!
