It’s Alive! Classic Literature Comes to Life on Halloween Through Ambitious Student Haunt Project.

Eighth-grade students at Cranbrook Kingswood Middle School for Boys welcomed members of the school community to their fourth annual student-created Haunted House on October 29 and 30.

The immersive attraction served as the culmination of nearly two months of interdisciplinary learning and planning by students.

The project began with a visit to Erebus, a professional haunted house in Pontiac, where students studied how designers use suspense, special effects and environmental storytelling to engage visitors.

Back in the classroom, students analyzed complex short stories and Gothic literature, examining how authors build suspense through setting, characterization and other literary techniques.

Guided by English teacher Christina Hammitt, students then applied those lessons by creating original haunted house concepts and designing themed rooms inspired by their literary studies.

The annual event provided students with a unique opportunity to transform literary analysis into a hands-on, collaborative experience while bringing together members of the Cranbrook Schools community. Visitors experienced a series of student-designed environments that combined storytelling, creativity and immersive design.
