From mentoring younger students at Cranbrook to improving access to mental health care in communities around the world,
Dr. Kashif “Kash” Ahmed ’07 has carried many of his early interests into a career devoted to helping others. Returning as this year’s Cum Laude Society keynote speaker, he encouraged students to savor their Cranbrook experiences while looking ahead with confidence and curiosity.

A Cum Laude student himself during his Cranbrook years, Ahmed had a special connection to the students being inducted this fall. He encouraged them to savor the friendships, teachers, and activities that have made their experience so rich, reminding them that these relationships and memories will stay with them long after graduation.
Today, Ahmed is a psychiatrist whose career has taken him from the University of Michigan to Yale and into communities around the world. His work focuses on mental health care for young people, refugees, and underserved populations, with an emphasis on understanding the cultural experiences and circumstances of those he serves. Now back in Michigan, he combines private practice in Ann Arbor with pro bono care in Detroit, teaching through Yale, and ongoing community mental health initiatives.
Some of the interests that guide his work today were already evident during his Cranbrook years. A four-year boarder and Resident Advisor, Ahmed was president of the Youth Enrichment Program, mentoring younger students, and president of India Club, sharing cultural traditions with his classmates. He was also an accomplished student-athlete, playing soccer and running track.
His former soccer coach, Chad O’Kulich, offered a warm and personal introduction at the ceremony. Ahmed’s visit also brought several legendary former faculty members back to campus, including David Watson, Dr. Jyotee Nagarkar, and Julio Aravena. Seeing these teachers return to celebrate a former student gave the newest Cum Laude inductees a glimpse of how the relationships formed at Cranbrook can continue well beyond graduation.
Ahmed’s visit also comes as the Class of 2007 prepares to celebrate its 20th Reunion, June 11–13, 2027. His return was a wonderful reminder of what makes Reunion so rewarding: reconnecting with the people who knew us when, revisiting familiar places, and discovering where life has taken our classmates.
