A Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Barnes Foundation with Architect Tod Williams ’61

Earlier this month, Carolynn and Aaron Frankel hosted an unforgettable tour of the Barnes Foundation, led by Barnes Foundation lead architect and Cranbrook alumnus Tod Williams ’61. Tod generously donated the experience to the Schools’ Window to the World event live auction—and what a tour it was!

Dedicated to education and to fostering an appreciation for fine art and horticulture, the Barnes Foundation has a rich history. In 1922, Dr. Albert C. Barnes purchased a 12-acre arboretum in Merion, Pennsylvania, and by 1925, a French-designed gallery had been built to house his renowned art collection. Nearly a century later, in 2012, the Barnes moved to its expanded home in Philadelphia, designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects.

The Frankels and their guests enjoyed a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the Barnes, enriched by Tod’s firsthand knowledge of its architecture, history, and the vision that brought the collection to life in the heart of Philadelphia. With Tod as their guide, the group received a true master class in architecture, design, and the art of creating a truly extraordinary place.

One of the day’s many highlights came when a group of Philadelphia students recognized Tod in one of the galleries. Ever gracious, Tod introduced himself and spent time chatting with the students, making an already memorable day even more special.
