Social Studies
At Brookside, social studies curriculum follows the Michigan State Sequence of Study, growing with students from first through fifth grade. Students begin by exploring Families and Schools and gradually expand their focus to the Local Community, Michigan Studies, United States Studies, and, finally, Integrated United States History.
Our approach is inquiry-based, encouraging students to ask meaningful questions, conduct research, analyze evidence, collaborate with peers, and reflect on their learning. Lessons balance direct instruction with student-led exploration, fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and meaningful connections to the real world. Through the development of driving questions and the investigation of relevant topics, students become active learners and thoughtful participants in the world around them. In this process, they build a strong sense of personal agency while developing the ability to communicate effectively across multiple platforms.
