Alumni and Families Explore the Institute of Science

There’s something special about seeing Cranbrook through the eyes of the next generation—and that spirit was on full display as alumni returned to the Cranbrook Institute of Science with children, grandchildren, and friends in tow for this year’s Alumni Takeover.

The evening had the feel of both reunion and rediscovery. Alumni moved through the Institute with their families, sharing stories of their time on campus while exploring exhibits that continue to evolve and inspire new curiosity. For many, a stop in the Hall of Minerals offered a meaningful point of connection—an opportunity to introduce the next generation to the remarkable collection, much of it originally gathered by Cranbrook founders George and Ellen Booth.

Throughout the museum, guests enjoyed after-hours access, including Mystery of the Mayan Medallion, an immersive experience that transported visitors to the ruins of Palenque, Mexico, where they followed clues to unravel the fate of a missing archaeological team. The Institute complemented the experience with a deeper look at Mayan culture, featuring authentic artifacts that brought the story into sharper focus.

For many, the highlight of the evening was a visit to the Cranbrook Observatory. Alumni introduced their families to the historic telescope originally installed in the Cranbrook Tower in 1927—now preserved at the Institute—before stepping outside to look through the Observatory’s modern telescope, a powerful pairing of Cranbrook’s past and present.

Younger guests added their own energy to the night, exploring hands-on exhibits, participating in scavenger hunts, and leaving with science-themed goodie bags in hand.

The evening was a reminder of what makes our community and campus distinctive: a place that invites return, rewards curiosity, and becomes even more meaningful when shared across generations.
