Katy Dresner
Class of 2011
Artist, Filmmaker, Kresge Arts Fellow
Katy Dresner ’11 is an award-winning filmmaker and interdisciplinary artist based in Detroit whose work blends experimental storytelling, digital culture, and visual art. At Cranbrook, Dresner stood out for their talent in both the arts and academics, earning recognition in sculpture, photography, and writing while also competing on the ski and golf teams. Encouraged by a community that nurtured creativity and exploration, Dresner pursued art and film at the University of Michigan, where they began forging a unique style that crosses boundaries between narrative film and installation art. Since then, they’ve brought their vision to short films, PBS-broadcast documentaries, and internationally exhibited media installations. A 2018 Sundance New Frontiers Fellow and 2024 Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellow, Dresner has also been recognized for their collaborative work in Detroit’s vibrant creative community. They describe their practice as rooted in the intersections of digital identity, memory, and self-expression—shaped by community, curiosity, and a belief in art as a tool for deeper understanding.
