Priya Duggal ’91 is a professor and vice chair in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she leads research exploring how human genetics influence the progression and severity of infectious diseases—from HIV and hepatitis to COVID-19 and long COVID. Having attended Cranbrook Schools from second grade on, Duggal credits here experiences here with sparking her intellectual curiosity and giving her the confidence to ask bold questions across disciplines. After majoring in international and comparative politics at Wesleyan University, she found her path in public health, earning both her master’s and doctoral degrees in epidemiology from Johns Hopkins. Her work spans global and local contexts—from studying why some children in Bangladesh are more resilient to gastrointestinal illness, to investigating the genetic factors that determine who is most at risk for severe or long-lasting outcomes from COVID-19. Combining rigorous science with a human-centered approach, Duggal is driven by a commitment to improving health outcomes at scale and uncovering the biological stories behind some of the world’s most persistent public health challenges.
