Lady Cranes: STATE CHAMPIONS 2010

The Lady Cranes defeated the Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils last night to become the 2010 Michigan Metro Girls Hockey League STATE CHAMPIONS.  The Blue Devils had been State Champs for two years, but the Lady Cranes put that streak to an end after double overtime last night.

The game was scoreless until sophomore Sydney Sakwa scored from behind the blue line against South - reminiscent of the 2005 CK Championship game, which was also won in double overtime against the same school. The single regulation game goal proved not to be enough. With seven seconds left in the third period, GPS scored on a power play and tied the game. It was a heartbreaking moment for the players and the fans.

But the game was not over. Colleen Jacoby played an amazing game and kept the Blue Devils scoreless through the first and second overtime as the offense continued to dig deep and play aggressively. Jacoby blocked 49 shots and was a huge factor in the win. The second overtime began with the fans screaming wildly, and the Lady Cranes fought on with every second. Every moment was played with heart and passion, and our girls did not give up. Finally, with one minute left in the second overtime, Sydney Sakwa scored the winning goal with assists from Caley Chelios, Amanda Schimpke, and Suzanne Dettling.
